Nate working on Davidson Comp Plan

In 2023, Nate Baker was elected to serve on the Durham City Council as an At-Large Council Member. Born and raised in Durham, Nate is an alum of Durham Public Schools and earned his Masters in City and Regional Planning from UNC Chapel Hill. Nate currently works as a professional urban planner, where he has helped design community-driven master plans for cities across the country.

For over ten years, Nate has been actively invested in regional politics, local policy initiatives, and community organizing. As a member of the Durham branch of the Triangle Democratic Socialists of America, he has been an advocate for a range of issues, from workers rights to environmental justice, that would make Durham a better place to live for all residents.

Before being elected, Nate had served as a member of Durham's Planning Commission starting in 2018, fighting for progressive initiatives like walkability improvements, inclusive engagement, and transit-oriented development. He plans to continue the work to support smart development that prioritizes affordability and sustainable growth while on the Council.

"We must work together to solve the challenges Durham is facing and to celebrate our wins. I will fight to empower all Durham residents, including our most marginalized groups, and provide the resources needed to shape your own future in our growing city."
